Manohar has his way

Staff Reporter

TENALI: Scenes of jubilation erupted on the crowded streets in Tenali minutes after the present Chairperson Tadiboyina Mastanamma was voted out at the no-confidence voting session. For once, there were smiles on the faces of Tenali MLA Nadendla Manohar and his supporters. The first-time MLA and son of former chief minister N. Bhaskara Rao was finally coming onto his own and emerging as a force to reckon with in the Congress. Three years back, an angry and sulking MLA watched helplessly as his rival group with the backing of MP V. Balashourie pulled the rug under his feet and installed Tadiboyina Mastanamma as the chairperson.

In stark contrast, on a balmy Monday, the jubilant MLA led the councillors out of the hall and was hugged, cheered and taken in a procession by his supporters. The MLA also displayed his political acumen by proposing Doddaka Seetamahalakshmi, from the same Yadava community as her predecessor, in a bid to neutralise the backlash in the community.

“I will do my best in ushering change and develop the municipality. One of my first priorities is to put back the pending proposals for laying a comprehensive underground drainage system in place and get the sanction from the Union Ministry of Urban Development,” Mr. Manohar told The Hindu. Development in the special grade-11 municipality has taken a beating in the last three years and the absence of a full-time municipal commissioner has made matters worse. The MP proposed a protected water scheme at a cost of Rs.1 crore and a Kendriya Vidyalaya, but both the proposals were yet to take off. Major parts of the town still get inundated when it rains heavily.
