TIRUCHI: A kennel for the sniffer dogs attached to the Tiruchi City Police is coming up on an area of 1,075 square feet inside the sprawling Armed Reserve Ground of the city police in K.K. Nagar here.

Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation is expected to complete the work before March end.

Squad has two dogs

At present, the squad has two German Shepherd dogs – ‘Julie’ and ‘Rosy’.

These two canines are being used for detecting explosive and narcotic substances respectively, according to police sources here.

The dogs have four handlers.

Ever since the squad was formed in 2001, the canines have been in a temporary kennel located inside the ground at K.K. Nagar, say the sources.

The kennel is being constructed close to the existing one and can accommodate four dogs.

The new facility for the squad will have a kitchen and an office for the handlers. It will also have a room for the dogs.

Proposal for two puppies sent

The sources said that a proposal had been forwarded to authorities for sanction of two puppies.

Of the two one would be used for crime detection and the other for narcotic detection.

The proposal had been sent as Rosy had grown old.
