ADILABAD: Mahesh Sharma, former Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, on Tuesday warned of a widespread impact of the current global economic recession. He said the impact of the recession will also be felt by traditional artisans though the quantum of it would be revealed over a period of time.

Addressing a gathering of artisans and craftsmen from across the country at the inaugural of the three-day Sahyadri Kala Utsav at the Kala Ashram here, Dr. Sharma who is one of the founders of the Rashtriya Karigar Panchayat (RKP), co-organiser of the event, said India exports handicrafts worth thousands of crores of rupees every year. Artisans need to tie up their vocation with the needs of local communities for long time survival, he suggested.

President of RKP and chairperson of the Magan Sangrahalay, Wardha, Maharashtra, Dr. Vibha Gupta said the organisation endeavours to provide identity and a market for the traditional artisans. Adilabad Collector Ahmad Nadeem promised necessary help through government schemes. Guruji Ravinder Sharma of Kala Ashram, Hanmanth lakhekar, Prabhudas Chauhan and Kisanbhai were present.
