3, 516 artistes to perform at Dharwad Zilla Utsav

DHARWAD: A total of 3,516 artistes, including those of national and international repute, will present 318 cultural programmes during the Dharwad Zilla Utsav this year.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Dharwad Zilla Utsav Committee Darpan Jain said that the programmes would be held simultaneously at 14 venues in Hubli and Dharwad on November 21, 22 and 23.

Mr. Jain said that the performers would include 270 performers belonging to 43 teams, who were selected at the Yuva Dharwad Utsav held recently. He said 85 per cent of the artistes performing during the utsav were from the district.

Mr. Jain said that “Hasyotsava”, in which B. Pranesh, Richard Louis, Narasimha Joshi and others would be participating was an added attraction this year. The utsav would also have another attraction in the form of Sufi singers Wadali Brothers and ghazal singer Ghulam Ali.

He said that half-a-day would be dedicated to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, a native of erstwhile Dharwad district, who recently received the Bharat Ratna. On the second day of the utsav, a programme dedicated to Pt. Joshi would be held at Srujana Rangamandir on Karnatak College Campus during which a documentary on Pt. Joshi and his music would be screened, he said.

The theme for the painting competition for the children and the rangoli competition would be Pt. Joshi. While there would be a tableau on Pt. Joshi during the inaugural procession, rare photographs of Pt. Joshi would be exhibited on the campus of Karnatak College, he said.

Since Kannada had been accorded classical language status, there would be a tableau on the history and heritage of Kannada culture during the inaugural procession, Mr. Jain said.

Mr. Jain said that the district administration had extended an invitation to Pt. Joshi and Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for the inaugural ceremony. They were yet to confirmation their participation.

The Deputy Commissioner said that approximately Rs. 65 lakh would be spent on the utsav. While the Department of Kannada and Culture had sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh, the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation would be releasing Rs. 20 lakh. “We are also seeking contributions from various private organisations and efforts are being made to secure more funds from the department,” he said.
