Rural education is priority of new Karur Collector

KARUR: J. Uma Maheswari took over as Collector of Karur district on Monday. She succeeds T.N. Venkatesh who has been transferred.

Mrs. Maheswari was Deputy Collector in Thiruvallur district. A post graduate in English literature, Mrs. Uma Maheswari said that she would continue the support Mr. Venkatesh extended to the differently-abled. Further, rural education and public grievances would be accorded priority.

A native of Thanjavur district with a keen interest in veena, Mrs. Maheswari observed that petitions from the public would get due respect and emphasis would be on attending to the grievances even if solutions were not immediately found.

Another priority was public distribution system which would be strengthened, she added. “I will strive for the overall development of Karur district,” she said.

Prompt action needed

All heads of department should be present at the public grievances redressal meetings on Mondays and the mass contact programmes that are being conducted regularly in several panchayats, she said.

Participating in a grievances redressal meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, Mrs. Maheswari said that petitions from the public needed to be given utmost importance and that prompt action should be taken on them.

To facilitate this, only heads should be present at the meetings. In case it is not possible, then the next officer should attend the meetings, she emphasised.

Cheques given

During the meeting, the Collector gave away a cheque for Rs. 10,000 under the aegis of the District Welfare Trust for the Disabled to Amutha of Mayanur for treatment and Rs. 5,000 to Mahewari of Kuppam for limb treatment and Rs. 5,000 through Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited to Rajendran for establishing a petty shop.
