Inconvenience: Commuters on the pavement where a bus shelter was demolished on Wednesday. MADURAI: The Anna Nagar Eighty Feet Road and the surrounding areas are a burgeoning commercial hub as well as a most sought after residential area. The junction popularly called as Suguna Store junction had a bus shelter a few paces from the square, which was conspicuously missing since November 5. The bus shelter meant for general public use, which stood there for more than a decade, was pulled down by corporation authorities on Wednesday last. The public out there to board the bus complained that the civic space meant for them has been removed to help a commercial space thrive. A shop has been opened behind the place where the bus shelter stood and it is overtly visible that pure commercial interests have taken precedence over genuine public cause said K. Ramasamy a regular commuter for more than 15 years. Commuters now whether it’s rain or shine have to stand on the road without a place to sit. The dislodging of the bus shelter seems to have happened without the knowledge of the Corporation Councillor S. Jaganathan, Ward 8 (Anna Nagar). He said that bus shelters in dilapidated condition have been removed elsewhere in the city to build new shelters but wonders why a shelter in good condition in a busy road was removed. He also said that an automatic traffic signal was essential for the junction. Communist Party of India (Marxist) Corporation Council leader K. Ganesan termed the move to remove the shelter as atrocious and said that shelters meant for commuters were removed in Periyar Bus Stand and Mattuthavani Bus Stand and the same trend has extended now to other major places. When contacted, Madurai Corporation Executive Engineer V. Mohandas said that they would build a new bus shelter within two weeks.
