The festival with a unique identity

From November 14 to 23 Chennai set to get an eclectic choice of music

CHENNAI: The Hindu Friday Review November Fest 2008 will provide an eclectic choice of music to the city’s connoisseurs, said V. Kalidas, vice-president (advertising), The Hindu.

Addressing a press conference at Hotel Taj Connemara, he said, “We are emboldened to hold this festival before the big and renowned December season only because it has its own unique identity, offering different genres of music.”

The fourth edition of the Fest, to be held from November 14 to 23, will feature seven concerts by Girija Devi (Hindustani vocal, November 14), Shujaat Husain Khan (Hindustani instrumental, November 15), Srinivas, Anuradha Sriram, Chinmayi and Naresh Iyer (Hindi film songs, November 16), Bombay Jayashri and T.M. Krishna (Carnatic vocal, November 20), the Thomas Siffling Trio from Germany (acoustic jazz and electronic groove, November 21), Prahlad Singh Tipaniya and Sriram Parasuram (Indian fusion, November 22), and Shubha Mudgal (fusion and Indi-pop, November 23).

All performances will be held at the Music Academy. Among the allied activities of the Fest this year are non-ticketed events such as symposium, workshops, walk-in concerts and the screening of a film on santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

“As we are known for providing the best audio solutions in the world, music is something we relate very closely to,” said Ritesh Pandey, general manager (marketing), Bose, in a message. Noting that Bose returns as the presenting sponsor of the Fest, he said, “This synergy has made our association very special.”

“They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but we believe that the way to the heart of a Chennaiite is through music,” said K. K. Raman, head (homes) of DLF Limited, an associate sponsor. “Being associated with this event is a great way to get closer to our customers in the city.”

G. P. Chadha, regional manager (South-1) of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a first-time associate sponsor of the Fest, compared the experience of driving a Maruti car to the soothing effect of music. “This is proved by our number one rating in customer satisfaction for the last nine years,” he said.

On the other hand, Ramakanth V. Akula, vice-president (decoratives) of Nippon paint, another associate sponsor, drew parallels between music and the business of painting homes. “Colour and music have a lot in common – they raise the spirit and evoke emotion,” he said. “We’re always here to promote music or any other art form.”

The beverage partner for the Fest is AV Thomas & Co Ltd for the fourth year running.

“We will bring our unique blend of coffee and chicory for that special filter coffee experience to this year’s Fest as we did for the others,” said Victor Niranjan, its vice-president.

V. H. Harris, zonal marketing manager (Tamil Nadu and Kerala) of LG Electronics and Kulbhushan Seth, head (sales and marketing) of Casio, both first-time associate sponsors, discussed the synergy between the Fest and their brands.

“Our corporate philosophy has always been of creativity and contribution –to create products of unique function and contribute to society,” said Mr.Seth.

“Being associated with this sort of event is a wonderful way to meet our customers and create brand awareness,” added Mr.Harris.

Other associate sponsors for the Fest include RMKV Silks, Xone, and Indian Bank, with Hotel Taj Connemara returning as the hospitality partner and Show Space as the event manager.
