State to go ahead with teachers’ recruitment

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: To fill vacancies in schools, the State government is appointing secondary grade teachers, which will be bound by the Supreme Court’s final judgment.

An official release said that during 1996, the DMK government introduced the appointment of teachers through seniority in the employment exchange at the district level.

Till last year, the secondary grade teaches were recruited on this basis. However, a section of unemployed teachers filed a petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The court ruled that those with seniority in employment exchange be appointed. Some affected people went on appeal in the Madurai Bench, which ordered that the appointment be based on the State-level seniority. The government appealed against this ruling in the Supreme Court. In its interim order, the Supreme Court said that as per the Constitution and without affecting the basic rights, teachers should be recruited.
