Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A former zonal committee secretary of the Communist Party of India(Marxist) and a supporter of the party were convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code of the murder of teenager Tapasi Malik in December 2006.

A court at Chandanagore in the Hooghly district convicted Suhrid Dutta and Debu Malik under sections pertaining to murder, criminal conspiracy and removal of evidence.

Their sentence is to be passed on Wednesday.

Tapasi Maliks’s charred body was found at the site of the Tata Motors’ car project, since relocated, at Singur.

Her murder had occurred at a time when Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was on a hunger strike here to protest against the land acquisition.

Ms. Banerjee had claimed that Tapasi Malik, who was supporting her cause, had been murdered by CPI(M) activists.

Welcoming the court’s verdict Ms. Banerjee demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
