Patna: An executive engineer of the Water Resources department was on Wednesday arrested by the Bihar Vigilance Bureau allegedly after being caught red-handed taking bribe from his junior. Ramayana Singh, executive engineer of the Sone canal division posted at Bhojpur district headquarter Ara, was arrested from his office taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a clerk working under him, Additional Director General (Vigilance) Neelmani told PTI. He said the executive engineer had demanded Rs 5,000 from routine clerk Arun Kumar Suman to give him his raised salary and the benefit of assured career progression scheme despite an order by the chief engineer of the Water Resources Department in 2007. Singh had already taken Rs 1,000 from Suman for giving the benefits due to him following which the latter lodged a complaint with the Vigilance Bureau. A trap was laid and the executive engineer was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 2,000 from Suman, who is due to retire on December 31 this year, Mr. Neelmani said. He said the Bureau sleuths were searching the flat of Ramayana Singh at Basant Kunj apartment in Punaichak locality of the State capital. The engineer was being brought to Patna for interrogation after which he will be produced before the Special Vigilance Judge, the ADG said. -- PTI
