NREGS workers get Rs. 5 crore as wages

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal district administration has disbursed Rs. 5 crore as wages to the workers employed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Collector U. Sagayam has said.

Inspecting the works being carried out under the scheme in various parts in the district on Tuesday, the Collector said the administration sanctioned development works to the tune of Rs. 30 crore under the scheme till date.

The sanctioned works included desiltation of water bodies and water carrying channels, deepening of ponds and formation of mud roads. The works were progressing well in all the 19 blocks, he said.

The Collector said the administration had covered a total of 132 village panchayats under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam in 2006-07 and 2007-08. In the current fiscal, the scheme is being implemented in 66 more village panchayats.

Development works to the tune of Rs. 39.6 crore had been taken up and completed under the scheme till date. Mr. Sagayam inspected the development works in a number of villages coming under the Namakkal block. He distributed identity cards to persons for providing employment under the NREGS. Interacting with the people, he clarified their doubts regarding the wage fixation process under the scheme.

The Collector asked the officials to inform the administration if goods meant for supply under the public distribution system were being smuggled.
