Hindu Kanikkars demand caste certificate

Special Correspondent

SALEM: Beating their traditional ‘udukkai,’ a small leather drums in their hands here on Wednesday, the members of the Salem District Kudukudappandi Hindu Kanikkar Association have urged the State Government to issue caste certificates to their wards so that they can study higher education.

The members after submitting a petition at the Collectorate claimed that they had been demanding caste certificates since many of their wards who wished to study higher education could not do so. They were not permitted to write public examinations, they pointed out.

They said that they remained uneducated and struck in their hereditary practices of soothsaying and other related activities. But since their children wanted to study, they also were ready to educate them. “But with no caste certificates our wards are denied education,” one of the members said.

Hence, they requested the district administration to provide them caste certificates immediately.
