Koyilandy to mechanise waste management

KOZHIKODE: The Koyilandy municipality is in the process of mechanising its waste treatment operations.

Municipal chairman K. Dasan said the mechanisation project, which would go on stream as soon as power connection was secured, envisaged a more efficient and speedy segregation and treatment of garbage. The machinery being installed at the municipal dumping ground in Varikunnu at a cost of Rs.8.5 lakh included that for cutting. Now the Kudumbasree self-help groups were involved in the segregation and conversion of the wastes into vermi compost, he said.

The municipality now generated as much as six tonnes of wastes a day. A fence would be put up around the dumping yard, he said.

As part of a more environment-friendly approach towards waste disposal, the municipality was putting up a green belt in the area. Besides traditional tree varieties such as Neem, a garden of flowering plants would be nurtured near the dumping ground, Mr. Dasan said.

Decentralisation of garbage treatment was part of the scheme envisaged by the municipality. Waste treatment plants were proposed to be set up at Viyoor and Naderi. Later ward-level treatment of wastes was planned.

Now the municipality sold ‘Jaiva’ brand vermi compost manufactured by it, at Rs.50 a kg. A ten-member group was involved in the manufacture process. A marketing outlet was operating at the bus stand and there was good demand for the product, Mr. Dasan said.
