TUTICORIN: The special medical camp by Lifeline Express, ‘hospital on rails,’ hosted by Tata Steel at Nazareth railway station catered to the medical needs of around 2,500 patients in the district.

The eight-day camp that concluded on Tuesday helped seven patients undergo surgery for cleft lip by doctors of the Lifeline Express. The project was in collaboration with Indian Railways and Impact India Foundation.

S. Asokan, Executive in-charge, Titania Project, Tata Steel said that 65 ortho-appliances, 94 hearing-aids and 168 spectacles were provided to patients free of cost. Over 400 patients of ENT-related problems were referred to Government hospital for further treatment, he said.

The ‘hospital on rails’ was inaugurated on November 5, by Minister of State for Home Affairs V. Radhika Selvi and Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan.

“Today, there is a critical need for delivering quality health services in remote areas … Through this initiative, Tata Steel, wanted to reach out to the society and provide support and best possible health facilities to the needy people,” Dr. Asokan said.

A total of 168 patients were tested for refractive error and were provided with spectacles at free of cost. Besides, 369 patients were benefited by the ENT Camp.

Tata Steel has hosted the Lifeline Express 13 times in Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh. This was the first time that the ‘hospital on rails’ visited Tamil Nadu, Dr. Asokan, said.
