Trace the roots offer

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Indian mission in Sri Lanka on Wednesday announced a scheme titled “Tracing the Roots” under which persons of Indian origin desirous of tracing their roots could make a representation along with the prescribed fee and supporting documents.

A statement issued by the Indian mission said the programme only provided for gathering information of the ancestors of the applicant. It did not have any provision for the visit of the applicant to his/her ancestral place(s).

“In case the applicant wishes to visit these places, the Ministry/Indiroots [an NGO] would facilitate such visits but the applicant would have to bear all related expenditure.”

The statement said applications could be deposited with the High Commission with Indian Rupees 20,000/- in Sri Lankan currency in the form of a crossed cheque or demand draft in favour of “High Commission of India, Colombo”. It said the Ministry would forward the application to “Indiroots”.

The details like name of close surviving relatives, place of origin of their forefathers (paternal and maternal side) and a possible family tree would be prepared by “Indiroots” and submitted to the Ministry approximately within three months from the date of receipt of the application by it.

The information received from “Indiroots” would then be sent to this High Commission at the earliest for onward transmission to the applicant.
