CHENNAI: Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam on Wednesday said the government will initiate action against private hospitals if they carry out organ transplants without obtaining permission from it. Speaking after inaugurating a ‘Kids and Teen’ health camp at Malar Hospitals in the city, he said stringent guidelines would be brought in to regulate organ transplants in private hospitals. Mr. Panneerselvam also underscored the need for more private hospitals to take part in the free heart surgery scheme of the government. A total of 600 children have been operated upon in the past six to seven months under the scheme. A total of 17 hospitals have entered into agreement with the government for implementing the scheme. CleanlinessStating that lack of cleanliness was one of the issues of concern at the government hospitals, the Minister urged healthcare institutions in the private sector to adopt government hospitals and help them improve. Mr. Panneerselvam said the new government medical colleges in Tiruvarur, Sivaganga and Peramabalur would start functioning next year. The government would take steps to provide placements for students of private nursing colleges also, he added. Zonal Director of Fortis Malar Hospitals Krish Ramesh said that as part of its Community Arogya Programme, the hospital conducted gynaecology and orthopaedic camps recently. Timely and correct health checks are required for all age groups, including children, he added. Consultant Paediatrician and neonatologist G. Prabhakaran said the ‘Kids and Teens’ camp would provide comprehensive health check package for children. It would be held till November 18, excluding Sunday. Actor Ramya Krishnan, Hospital Director Nithya Ramamurthy and consultant paediatrician and neonatologist Benny Benjamin participated in the programme.
