Discussion: The general body meeting of the zilla panchayat in progress in Mangalore on Wednesday.

MANGALORE: President of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K.P. Sucharitha Shetty on Wednesday directed a senior official of the panchayat to submit a report on the status of works taken up under the Ganga Kalyan scheme in the district, within a month.

Presiding over the general body meeting of the panchayat, Mr. Shetty said that the district Social Welfare Officer should submit the report after consulting the district manager, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation.

P. Shivashankar, Chief Executive Officer of the panchayat, said that the State Government had sanctioned 11 anganwadi buildings for Dakshina Kannada this year against the demand for 1,300 such structures.

He said that construction of ananganwadi building cost Rs. 2.5 lakh. The Government would give 1.75 lakh for such buildings through the taluk panchayats.

At that point, Mr. Shetty requested the MLAs at the meeting to sanction Rs. 75 lakh for each such building from the MLAs’ fund. B. Ramanatha Rai, U. T. Khader and K. Vasantha Bangera, MLAs, were present at the meeting. Mr. Khader said that he would consider the request.

Replying to questions from Shaila Sequeira and Victoria D’Cunha, members representing Kateel and Bajpe constituencies respectively, on acquisition of land for the Mangalore special economic zone, Mr. Shivashankar said that the Government had issued a notification to this effect. The panchayat could not overrule the Government’s notification, he said.

Mr. Shetty said that the Deputy Commissioner had written to the panchayat that no new licences should be issued for construction of buildings on the notified land. He said that the panchayat was not the authority to decide whether the SEZ should be allowed or not.

Mr. Rai alleged that officials of the Department of Public Instruction had insulted him by printing his name for functions to inaugurate buildings under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan at four different places in Bantwal taluk on the same day. He alleged that his name had been printed without consulting him. The officials did not consult him before scheduling the programmes. He wanted to know how he could attend four programmes at the same time on the same day.

To this, Mr. Shetty directed the Block Education Officer of the taluk to ensure that such incidents did not recur.
