Achuthanandan discounts Durai Murugan’s charge

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday discounted Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister Durai Murugan’s statement that he had not shown the courtesy of replying to a letter from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi requesting release of water from the Neyyar river.

“It cannot be true,” the Chief Minister told mediapersons at his weekly Cabinet briefing.

The Chief Minister said Mr. Murugan’s statement was part of the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to line up people against Kerala by adopting unilateral positions.

Tamil Nadu had taken a stand that nothing would happen to the people of Kerala if the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam was raised to 145 feet or even 152 feet.

However, the very Supreme Court judge, who had ordered the raising of the water level, had a different view after counsel for Kerala explained the consequences of a dam-burst.

If the more than 110-year-old dam gave way, four to five districts of Kerala would be flooded and 35 lakh people washed down to the Arabian sea.

The judge had pronounced his earlier order without understanding those issues.

On hearing them, the judge had asked Tamil Nadu whether the water level could not be kept at 136 feet.

A Bench, which included that judge, was now hearing the Mullaperiyar cases.

Kerala was arguing that a new dam was the only option.

No dam as old as Mullaperiyar was in service anywhere in the world.

Kerala was praying that help should be provided to build a new dam.

The State would decide on its future course of action after hearing the Supreme Court verdict and learning the Central government’s stand on the issue.
