Sheep wool yarn produced by women in Kausani is used to make garments and handicrafts
For a cause: Prema Joshi and others in Adilabad. ADILABAD: In the beautiful hills of Kumaon region in Uttaranchal, social work goes hand in hand with handicraft with Anand Ballabh and Prema Joshi running the Chandra Matri Evam Bal Kalyan Samiti and produce handmade winter clothing. The NGO working with problem children operates from the scenic Kausani in Almora district, overlooking the great Himalayan range. Besides working with 600 children, the Samiti also enlists the help of mothers of these problem children and organises legal aid for them. Representatives of the organisation were here to participate in the Sahyadri Kala Utsav at Kala Ashram, which ended on Thursday. “The cultural values which a mother can cultivate in her children cannot be imparted at schools. Hence, we teach both the mother and the child about the routine cultural aspects so that a better citizen gets moulded of the child,” explains Ms. Prema Joshi. “Jab main katai karnoon, mekai bhala lagoon,” she observes in Kumaoni. “I feel good while spinning wool because it takes away my mind from the daily distress. It helps me concentrate. I spin wool even while engaged in some other activity,” she reveals. The sheep wool yarn produced by the women at the Ashram that houses the Samiti is used to make woollen wear like garments and handicrafts.
