DAMAGED: The damaged basement of the iron fence at the bathing ghats of Valiyakoickal Sastha Temple in River Achencoil at Pandalam. PATHANAMTHITTA: The delay in constructing an iron fence on the accident-prone stretch of the Valiyakoickal Sastha Temple bathing ghats in the Achencoil at Pandalam poses a danger to hundreds of pilgrims visiting the place during the annual Sabarimala pilgrim season. The Water Resources Department used to erect an iron fence along the accident-prone stretch of the river banks at the bathing ghats every year in an effort to prevent people from entering the dangerous portion of the river course. However, this time around, the Irrigation wing of the department is yet to repair even the damaged portion of the retaining wall on which the fencing was done earlier. The retaining wall was damaged in the previous floods. Pilgrims visiting Pandalam have no other alternative but to take bath in the river as the palace town does not have adequate number of bathrooms at the base camp.
