Parties condemn law college clash

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Leaders of various political parties on Thursday condemned the clash between two groups of students at the Ambedkar Government Law College here.

Expressing shock, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said the students indulged in violence in front of the police, using spades and iron rods. Already people in the State had lost faith in the police machinery and incidents such as this would further create panic among them. A group of AIADMK leaders met the students undergoing treatment at the Government General hospital.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss said in a statement that the violent incidents shown on television had shocked the entire State. Instead of controlling the clashes, the police said they were unable to take action as they had not received any order in writing.

The police and intelligence wing had failed in their duty to control the clashes, said MDMK general secretary Vaiko, who appealed to the students to maintain calm.

CPI State secretary D.Pandian said the real reasons for the violent attacks should be probed. The government should identify elements trying to divide the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes.

The college administration had failed to take any action to diffuse tension among students, said CPI (M) secretary N. Varadarajan. Both the intelligence wing of the police and the college administration knew about the clashes but kept quiet, which was shocking, said Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi president Thol Thirumavalavan.

“Eyewash”

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijayakant alleged that the suspension and transfer of a few police personnel in connection with the clashes was only an eyewash.

The law college clash had shocked those who believed in democracy, said State BJP president L. Ganesan.

BJP MP S. Thirunavukkarasar said though the college administration was aware of the problems among students, it did not take any step to control the flare-up.

TNCC president K.V.Thangkabalu also condemned the violence.
