Larger malaise

Whether Congress leader Margaret Alva’s cash-for-party ticket allegation was made out of her frustration over its denial to her son during the Karnataka Assembly elections or otherwise, it confirmed that dynastic culture holds sway over the oldest party. Her removal from all posts in the Congress also exposes the party’s policy of suppressing dissent.

Satwant Kaur,

Mahilpur

Ms Alva’s outburst points to the larger malaise afflicting our political culture. She went to town with the cash-for-ticket allegation only because the so-called victim was her son.

The charges she made are not limited to one political party. Every party does bank on the financial might of its candidates. Winnability is defined only in terms of money and muscle power.

Muthi-ur-Rahman Siddiqui,

Bangalore

The resignation of Ms Alva, a long time general secretary of the AICC, does not augur well for the party at this juncture. Is it an unwritten rule in the Congress that party functionaries should not protest openly?

P.K.V Menon,

Pattambi

Ms Alva’s outburst should not be ignored as it reveals the malpractice that prevails in almost all political parties. Her charge should be probed thoroughly by the Election Commission.

Balvinder Singh,

Chandigarh
