Corrections and clarifications

A Chennai report “‘Winds of change will sweep India too [says L.K. Advani]”’(November 13, 2008) made a reference to S. Krishnaswamy (in the text and caption of the accompanying photograph) as being “the former Air Chief Marshal”. The Chief of Air Staff is a designation and Air Chief Marshal is a rank. The correct form of address would be former Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy (Retired).

The report also referred, incorrectly, to Mr. Advani being the “Bharatiya Janata Party president”. Mr. Rajnath Singh is the National President of the BJP. Mr. Advani, as mentioned in the accompanying photo caption, is the BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition (Lok Sabha).

In the caption of a standalone photograph relating to Mr. Advani (and titled “Advani’s condolence visit”, November 13, 2008), Mr. L. Ganesan was referred to incorrectly as the secretary of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit. He is the BJP’s State president.

A sentence in the eleventh paragraph of an article “Reject the Margaret Alva proposition” (Editorial page, November 12, 2008) was “Sardar Patel was ably assisted by his sister, and Jawaharlal Nehru by his daughter.” The reference is to Miss Maniben Patel, who was the Sardar’s daughter, not sister.

The heading of a PTI report was “Jharkhand threatens to invoke ESMA against para-teachers” (November 11, 2008). A few readers wanted to know who para-teachers are. The Executive Editor, PTI, clarifies that in Jharkhand, the Government describes as para-teachers those staff who are appointed on contract (which is then renewed every year). They take classes from standards one to five. These teachers now want to be made permanent.
