GUTSY SHOW: Gayathry Govindharaj of Tamil Nadu set a new record in the 100m hurdles for under-18 girls in the Junior National athletics championship in Mysore on Thursday.

MYSORE: Three National records and a meet record was established on the second day of the Junior National athletic championship, which saw a crowded afternoon schedule extending well past sunset and the boys’ under-18 long jump event being held under lights at the Chamundi vihar stadium here on Thursday.

The three National records all came in the under-18 category. If Saba Bhagat of Maharashtra set the National record in the boys’ under-18 with a 14.06 seconds effort in the 110 metre hurdles, Gayathry Govindharaj, the rising star from Tamil Nadu smashed Poonam Bojanna’s long standing mark of 14.39 seconds for the 100 metre hurdles for girls’ under-18.

Prabhjot Singh of Punjab late into the evening hurled the discus to a new national mark of 58.10 metres, besting Simranjit Singh’s six year old mark of 55.35 metres.

Smooth sailing

Sailing smoothly over the hurdles Saba Bhagat stopped the clock at 14.06 seconds to better Akil Krishnan’s year-old mark of 14.38 seconds set at Vijaywada last year. The 12th standard student from Mumbai’s MKS College had a previous best of 14.17 seconds and is trained by coach K.B. Singh.

Gayathry, a first-year MSc student of Computer Technology, Chennai had created a ripple at the recently held Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune winning a gold (4 x100 m relay) and two silvers (100m hurdles and triple jump) there.

Good show

On a day when Kerala showed a strong presence winning seven golds, T.I. Sithara soared to a new meet record in the girls’ under-20 polevault with a clearance of 3.26 metres eclipsing V.S. Surekha’s previous mark of 3.25 metres set in 2003. Surekha however holds the National mark of 3.45 metres.

In the girl’s under-20 400 metres all eyes were on Tintu Luka of Kerala, a product of P.T. Usha’s school in Koyilandy and M.R. Poovamma of Karnataka, who was part of the Indian contingent to Beijing Olympics.

Though Poovamma caught up with the Kerala girl at the 200 metres mark, Tintu, watched by her mentor from the sidelines, switched gears on the straight and breasted the tape about five metres ahead in a time of 54.53 seconds. Poovamma was timed at 55.77 seconds while Anu Mariam Jose also from Kerala finished third in a time of 56.83 seconds.
