Free software exhibition begins

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: “Passwords are like chewing gum, they taste best when fresh. Change your password regularly”, says the Cyber Cell of Kochi City Police participating in the free software exhibition that began at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) on Thursday.

Organised as part of the national conference on free software (November 15 and 16), the event is showcasing various aspects of free software to the visitors. The Cyber Cell of Kochi Police is trying to spread awareness against cyber crimes through this programme.

A student eager to know more about cyber crimes got a few tips from the cyber cell members. “Do not reveal personal information to unknown people or websites. Create hard-to-guess passwords and keep them private and change them regularly. Do not open emails from unknown sources,” they said.

Aravind Anil, a school student, said that he also received expert advice to update his operating system regularly.

Ramesh Babu, an engineering student, said that the cell also provided them information on ‘safe online banking’. “We have to check that the online banking website is secure. Do not copy or click on any links attached to emails. Check your account statements to ensure that no unauthorised transaction has taken place,” he said.

M. Bhasi, Chairman of the exhibition committee, said that industry representation include stalls of ISRO, BSNL, NIC, and C-DIT. Private organisations have also put up stalls at the venue (Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering, CUSAT main campus, Kalamassery).

Dr. Bhasi said that the popular Centre for Science in Society, functioning on the campus, will be open to the student community from 9 a.m. till November 16. The centre has several science gadgets on display. More details about the exhibition can be had from Dr. M. Bhasi (9447419863) and P. M. Aneesh (9846624893).
