Railway official held

CHENNAI: A senior official of Southern Railway was arrested after he took a bribe of Rs.1 lakh from a contractor in Tiruchi on Wednesday night.

P.V. Reddy, Senior Divisional Engineer (Coordination), Tiruchi Division, was taken into custody by sleuths of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch. The official was produced in a special court in Madurai and remanded to judicial custody till November 26.

Sources in the agency said M. Pandidhurai was awarded a contract for raising the platform level and improving flooring in the Srirangam station. During the execution, he was asked to undertake a few other construction works that were not part of the contract. After considerable delay in according sanction to the additional work, Mr. Reddy demanded a bribe of Rs.1 lakh from the contractor. The official warned of consequences if he failed to pay before November 12. Mr. Pandidhurai sent a complaint to the CBI in Chennai.
