Stress on physical fitness among children

KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has called for efforts for making children physically fit as a way to fight morbidity among them caused by changing lifestyle trends.

Fitness scheme

Inaugurating the total physical fitness scheme at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School here on Friday, Mr. Balakrishnan said that physical fitness should be given importance it deserved in contemporary situation. School level physical fitness initiatives were important to ensure that children were healthy, Mr. Balakrishnan added.

The Minister said that manual work was gradually disappearing even in households as there were gadgets for every household work.

He said that the Health Department projection says that 60 per cent of the population in the State would suffer from heart ailments and diabetes.

Focus on sports

Observing that lack of playgrounds and apartment culture were affecting the sports sector, Mr. Balakrishnan said that the proposed formation of panchayat and municipal-level sports councils and sports clubs would go a long way in developing sports in the State.

District panchayat president K.K. Narayanan presided over the function.
