‘Students get only 20 per cent of the skills in their chosen field from their classrooms’ SALEM: The teachers and students should keep pace with the technological advancements happening around the world and ensure continuous learning, said A. Kalanidhi, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and Chairman of the Commonwealth Science and Technology Academy for Research on Friday. He was inaugurating a two-day refresher course on creating smart technicians organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Engineering College. Mr. Kalanidhi pointed out the speed at which the new technologies are being developed across the world. The rapid technological advancements render both the syllabus and the teachers outdated within a short span of time. Students get only 20 per cent of the skills in their chosen field from their classrooms. They should look at the real world to gain the rest of the knowledge to become a qualified person in their field. Continuous learning will help them have a successful career, he said. While emphasizing the need for practical learning, Mr. Kalanidhi regretted the theory oriented teaching followed at many technical institutions. He also wanted an appropriate mechanism to be evolved to improve the technical education quality and bring in best practices in the institutions across the country. College Principal A. Nagappan presided. Faculty members and students attended the course.
