NEW DELHI: Two minor rag-pickers sustained injuries in a mysterious low-intensity blast in a garbage dump in Sector 22 of neighbouring Noida on Friday. The police suspect the incident to be cracker burst. Eight-year-old Monu and five-year-old Golu were sifting through the garbage dump located under a transformer near Chaura village around 1 p.m. when some object exploded. Monu sustained grievous injuries in his right palm and two of his fingers were blown off. Golu sustained minor burns all over his body. The injured children were taken to the district hospital and the police were informed. The entire area was cordoned off and bomb detection and disposal squad rushed in. Forensic experts picked up evidence from the spot. Preliminary investigations suggested that the incident was not a terror act. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (Noida) R. K. Chaturvedi, the exploded object to be a cracker dumped in the garbage. “It was a very low-intensity blast. However, we are investigating the case to ascertain what triggered the explosion,” he said, adding that the injured children had been referred to Safdarjung Hospital in the Capital. The Noida police have registered a case under the Explosives Act.
