61 p.c. injection practices unsafe: survey

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A survey conducted for three years across the country by IndiaCLEN Program Evaluation Network on behalf of the Ministry of Health and the World Bank revealed that 61.3 per cent of injection practices in the country were unsafe.

On an average 3-5 billion injection were administered every year.

At least two-thirds of them had the potential of transmitting blood-borne viruses afflicting at least 30 per cent of people with diseases like HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Paul Mallins of SafePoint, a UK-based non-governmental organisation, said they would be conducting a week-long campaign across India to educate people about the hazards in reusing injection syringes. The campaign would be supported by eminent personalities like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Kiran Bedi.
