GUNTUR: Six states are vying for the prestigious project to construct an industrial hub that would house several petrochemical units under a policy launched by the Central government, but the Opposition in the State is opposing it, Minister for Ports and Infrastructure M. Venkata Ramana, said here on Friday. The Integrated Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Regions (PCPIR) policy aimed at developing India as a hub for these sectors is a Central government project and the land acquired by individual industries, he explained. There is no ban on registration of lands between Srikakulam and Tuni as was being made out by the media and the Opposition, he said. "People are mixing up the Coastal Corridor, PCPIR, Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Port & Industrial Corridor (VANPIC) and do not know what to support or oppose in the face of false propaganda," the Minister claimed. The State government is providing 4,000 acres in Guntur and Prakasam districts at Motupalli and Nizampatnam for a ship-breaking unit and minor port respectively, while the remaining would be acquired by private persons, Mr. Ramana said. VANPIC, located in Prakasam and Guntur districts, envisions the development of a world class, port-based integrated industrial corridor, points out the Minister.
