UNSTOPPABLE: Kerala’s P.K. Anoop is all smiles after winning the boys’ under-20 100m race at the junior National athletic championship in Mysore on Friday.

MYSORE: Two Tamil Nadu girls — T. Manisha in the under-16 and Gayathry Govindharaj — hogged the limelight towards the closing moments of the third day of the junior National athletic championship.

The Chamundi Vihar stadium here for the second day in succession was engulfed in darkness, when the events dragged on on a day when Kerala’s P.K. Anoop emerged the ‘fastest boy’ of the meet.

Orissa’s Ranjita Mahant with a 12.28 second effort in the 100 metres for girls’ under-16 was the fastest amongst the girls as Srabani Nanda (Orissa - girls under-18) with 12.30 seconds and Sayali Dravid (Maharashtra) in the girls’ under 20 had a much slower time. Sayali was timed at 12.52 seconds.

T. Manisha had won the discus gold, but went one better in the javelin throw with a new National record of 37.42 metres, which erased Alpesh’s earlier mark of 3.31m.

Gayathry, who set a National mark in the 100m hurdles, equalled the triple jump national mark for under-18 girls, held by statemate L. Revathy with a leap of 12.78 metres.

Kerala continued its gold hunt, winning seven gold, five silver and five bronze medals for the day for a three-day haul of 16-14-12 tally. Anoop clocked 10.87 seconds to push back the challenge from Karnataka’s G.N. Bopanna (1.10 seconds) and teammate K. Shereef (11.15 seconds).

Karnataka too picked up a handful of medals with M. Arshad in the under-18 triple jump, Srishti Sunil girls’ under-14 high jump and K.C. Shruthi (1500m for girls under-18) all accounting for gold.
