Manchester United Premier Cup

CHENNAI: The Manchester United Premier Cup, Nike’s annual grassroot initiative for football in India, began in New Delhi on November 11. The programme will be conducted across different cities in India up to December 3.

The participating teams include Mohun Bagan, Mahindra United, JCT, Pune FC, Viva Kerala, Salgaocar, Sporting Clube de Goa, Sikkim Football Academy, Silchar FA, Mumbai Sports School Association, Pondicherry Coaching Centre and Uttaranchal.

The group stages will be held in three centres — New Delhi, Gangtok and Goa.

While the Delhi stage has already been gone through from November 11 to 13, the East Zone qualifiers will be held at the Palijor Stadium in Gangtok (November 18 to 20).

The South and West Zone qualifiers will be conducted in two stadiums in Goa: Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, and Raia ground near Fatorda from November 26 to 28.

The all-India final will be held at the Nehru Stadium (Fatorda) from December 1 to 3.

This is the fourth year in a row that Nike is conducting the tournament in association with All India Football Federation. The competition is open to footballers who are under 15 years of age.

Tiruchi shoots out Chennai

Tiruchi prevailed over Chennai 5-3 in a penalty shootout after their T.P. Ramaswamy Cup under-19 State-level tournament quarterfinal ended goalless in Chennai on Friday.

Tiruchi will meet Madurai in Saturday’s semifinal.

Tiruchi 0 (5: Saravana Kumar, Tamim Ansari, Hari Shanmuga Sundaram, Cyril Raj, Shankar) bt Chennai 0 (3: Wayne Antony D’Souza, Rajesh Kumar, Prem Kumar).
