Kanpur: Two comparatively lesser known teams topped the two groups and stormed into the next stage of Ruia Trophy event in the Golden Jubilee bridge Nationals being played at Kamla Nagar here. In Group ‘A’, Gurukripa (Aloke Sadhu, Keyzad Anklesaria, J.N. Roy, S.K. Saha, S.R. Bhattacharya and R.S. Gupta) topped with a score of 288 Victory Points, a full 27 points ahead of three second-placed teams. In the nick of timeThe Indian representative team, Formidables, just about recovered in time and was the 12th of 16 qualifiers from this group to the next mini league stage. Only 19 VPs separated the second and sixteenth qualifier in this group indicating the closeness of the contest. Consistent showIn Group ‘B’, Dr. P.K. Bera (N.P. Kabiraj, Dr. P.K. Bera, Swapan Ghose, Kanai Sirkar, Sambhu Ghose, Biswajit Poddar), who have been doing consistently well in the tournament so far, clinched the top place with a score of 289 VPs, 20 VPs ahead of Indian Railways ‘A’. The 32 qualifiers will play a mini Swiss league of eight rounds of 12 boards each late on Friday night and Saturday to decide the eight quarterfinalists. The top six qualifiers: Group A: Gurukripa (288), India Blues, Dhampur Sugar and Alok Daga (261 each), Maya Mira Sneha (259), C.V. Rao (252). Group B: Dr. P.K. Bera (289), Indian Railways ‘A’ (269), Tolani Shipping (266), Arun Jain (259), Poddar (258), NALCO (257).
