West Indies pacemen restrict Pakistan

LOCK STOCK AND BARREL: Kamran Akmal, who threatened briefly, is cleaned up by Lionel Baker in the second ODI at Abu Dhabi on Friday.

ABU DHABI: Opening bowlers Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor took three wickets each on Friday as West Indies’ line-and-length strategy restricted Pakistan to 232 in the second One-Day International at Zayed Cricket Stadium here.

Batting first after captain Shoaib Malik won the toss, Pakistan made a disappointing start, losing the openers inside the first three overs. Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and was bowled out with an over to spare.

Pakistan, which had collapsed to seven for two in the third over, was indebted to Misbah-ul-Haq (52), Kamran Akmal (45) and Younus Khan (34) but none could play long enough for a big total.

Salman Butt continued his woeful form and was the first to go, hitting a leading edge to bowler Taylor in the second over on 7. Khurram Manzoor, who top-scored for Pakistan with 69 in the opening match, was bowled trying to clear the infield off Powell for 0 in the next over.

Younus and Misbah staged a little recovery through a 51-run third wicket stand before both fell to injudicious shots. Younus played across to Daren Powell, while Misbah miscued a drive off spinner Nikita Miller and was caught in the deep.

Younus hit five boundaries while Misbah managed just one during his slow 86-ball knock.

Pakistan was further jolted when captain Shoaib Malik was run out for ten.

It was left to Akmal, who hit Taylor for two sixes in the 50th over to give Pakistan an unexpected win in the first match on Wednesday, and Shahid Afridi (28) to give some respectability to the innings. They shared a rapid 52-run stand and threatened for more but West Indies hit back, dismissing both in the space of just two runs.

Sohail Tanveer (26) used the long handle effectively, hitting Taylor for three boundaries in the 48th over before he was run out.

Pakistan’s lack of international experience showed, especially in the running between the wickets. There were two run outs and two near misses.

West Indies attack gave up only six extras, three of which were leg-byes. Playing only his second match, Leeward Islands fast bowler Lionel Baker conceded just 35 runs from 10 overs and took the wicket of Akmal.

Pakistan made two changes. Paceman Rao Iftikhar Anjum came in for the Abdur Rauf, who was very expensive in the first match, and Fawad Alam made way for off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.

West Indies also made one change, bringing in Jamaican paceman Shawn Findlay in place of Brendan Nash. — Agencies
