Heavy wind holds fishermen back

Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN: Thousands of fishermen, who operate around 300 mechanised boats and 5,000 country boats out of Tuticorin district, stayed ashore on Friday after a rough sea combined with squally winds and incessant drizzle stopped them from venturing into the sea.

As the wind velocity was higher than what is considered safe, the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare told fishermen not to venture out into the sea.

“Upon receipt of the information from the Meteorological Department office at Chennai that the current wind velocity had exceeded safe limits, fishermen have been told to refrain for their own safety,” a Fisheries Department official here said.

The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain for the next 24 hours accompanied by heavy winds. Fishermen have been told not to venture into the sea till further instructions were received, the official added.

No boats have been damaged so far.
