GUNTUR: Enthused by the response to his road show in Guntur district, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy claimed that his party would return to power by winning more than 230 Assembly seats. Apart from the public turn out, he said his confidence stemmed from his assessment that there would be a division in the non-Congress vote, the absence of groupism in the Congress and the track record of his government during the last four years. Speaking to reporters here on Friday morning after his one-day tour of the district, Dr. Reddy further maintained that triangular or quadrangular contests would benefit the Congress. “My party leaders say that we will win 180 seats. But, I guarantee that we will win nothing less than 230 seats,” he said. He dismissed reports of Praja Rajyam party’s political influence in the State saying that his feedback showed that it was confined only to the North Coastal region, East and West Godavari districts. In line with the party’s thinking, the Chief Minister said merit and winning chances of individuals would matter during selection of Congress in the next elections. “Even if my close follower is an aspirant, but his chances of victory are dim, I will not hesitate to prefer a better candidate,” Dr Reddy remarked. Taking a dig at PR president Chiranjeevi’s road shows, he said the situation was turning in favour of the Congress in all places that he was touring. He said he did not give much credence to the BJP leader L. K. Advani’s statement that his party would give Telangana with in 100 days if voted to power.
