3 Gujarat VHP leaders grilled

Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR: The Gandhinagar police on Thursday summoned three senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders from Gujarat, including State general secretary Kaushik Mehta, for questioning in connection with the defamatory mobile messages sent in the name of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

Mr. Mehta, Rajesh Shastri and Jagdish Dwivedi were grilled for over three hours.

Another senior VHP leader, Ashwin Patel, is already in police custody. He was arrested on October 27 after it was found that the messages were sent from his mobile number.

All efforts by the VHP leaders to get Mr. Patel released failed. The VHP was hoping to mend fences with Mr. Modi but the fresh summons to the senior leaders has further soured the relations.

After appearing before the police, Mr. Mehta told journalists that it was attempt by the Modi government to harass the VHP leaders and humiliate Hindus.
