TIFR, HCU sign MoU

HYDERABAD: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and University of Hyderabad on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding in the presence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for operating academic links between TIFR here and the university.

The institute proposes to create a new campus here to implement its plans for expansion of research, educational and related activities with a projected investment of Rs.2,500 crore over a period of 12 to 15 years.

Foundation soon

Dr. Reddy said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would lay the foundation for the campus during his forthcoming visit. Its construction would start in the current year itself.

“I am glad that TIFR is coming to Hyderabad and I see a great future for UoH and TIFR,” he obverved. Mustansir Barma, TIFR director, described the signing of MoU as a ‘historic step’.

Beneficial for both

The proposed TIFR campus and the university could benefit from each other’s strength.

A synergy of their academic programmes would be of great mutual benefit and provide unique opportunities for collaboration.

The two institutions would work towards providing high class training in Research & Development to the deserving students of both organisations.

Higher Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy, Prof. Barma, University Vice-chancellor Syed Hasnain, Principal Secretary (Higher education) Ashutosh Misra, were among those present.
