GOLDEN EFFORT: UP’s Praminder Kumar Patel clinched the boys’ under-18 pole vault gold in the junior National athletic championship at Mysore on Saturday.

MYSORE: Kerala’s R. Rajesh, the 10,000m silver medallist in the boys’ under-20 section on the opening day of the 24th junior National athletics championship, was on Saturday stripped of his medal.

In an official release, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed that the athlete had been barred from participating in any event at the national and international level for two years for submitting a ‘fake age certificate.’

The overage issue has time and again plagued the AFI events and the federation is now bent on taking stern action against the offenders. As far as doping is concerned, about 45 athletes have been randomly tested but the results are expected in about three weeks.

The penultimate day’s action at the Chamundivihar Stadium here saw Uttar Pradesh’s Parminder Kumar Patel soar to a height of 4.30 metres in the boys’ under-18 pole vault to rewrite the National record, the fifth of the championship. The earlier mark of 4.20m stood in the name of Virender Singh of Gujarat.

Tamil Nadu’s J. Preeth also bettered the previous National mark with a 4.25m effort.

In the boys’ under-20 category, Gurdit Singh of Punjab bested the shot put mark held by Kuldeep Mann of Delhi with a heave of 17.76m.

M.R. Poovamma of Karnataka made amends for her silver finish in the 400m with a gold in the 200m for girls under-20, clocking 24.81 seconds.
