DMK, CPI (M) will not participate in all-party meeting

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the CPI (M) will not participate in the all-party meeting convened by the CPI on November 17 to discuss further course of action in Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

“We are not attending the meeting. We have told the CPI leadership that we don’t agree with the party’s criticism that sending relief materials to the Tamils in Sri Lanka was only a farce,” CPI (M) state secretary N.Varadarajan told The Hindu.

Mr. Varadarajan said his party was for finding a political solution and India should pressure the Sri Lankan government through diplomatic means to achieve the purpose.

“Both sides should stop the war and come to the negotiation table,” he added.

“While expressing our standpoint on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, we are clear that it should not come in the way of the Left unity,” Mr. Varadarajan added.

The ruling DMK also decided not to attend the meeting.

“We have sent invitation to all political parties in Tamil Nadu. But the DMK has informed us that it could not attend the meeting because of the birth centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai in Coimbatore,” senior CPI leader C. Mahendran said.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said in Coimbatore that the DMK had nothing to do with the all-party meeting.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other organisations are likely to attend the meeting
