Some 75 surgeons attend the workshop In a live demo voice restored to a 40-year-old man
Delicate procedure: A surgical procedure being performed by phonosurgeon Phaniendra Kumar at the national workshop of phonosurgeons in Guntur on Sunday. — GUNTUR: Phonosurgeons across the country on Sunday watched in admiration as a patient with a benign tumour on his vocal chords was operated successfully on local anaesthesia. The 40-year-old man was in his senses and could observe phonosurgeon, V. Phaniendra Kumar perform flexible laryngoscopic assisted surgery also known as Office Laryngeal Surgery (OLS). Using a small laryngoscope to administer local anaesthesia in the nostril, the surgeon passed specially designed instruments orally and removed the tumour on the vocal fold. The entire surgical procedure was monitored by video monitor. “This procedure not only overcomes the difficulties of conventional Microlaryngeal Surgery (MLS) but also could be done by using local anaesthesia. The technique has already yielded successful results in about 600 patients suffering from benign vocal fold tumour,” Dr. Kumar said during the live surgical demo held on the premises of Sri Satya Sai Institute of ORL and Research Centre for Voice disorders. The live demo was held on the concluding day of the three-day national workshop on Phonosurgery held here. The workshop was attended by 75 phonosurgeons across the country, including international and national faculty members, Hong-Shik Choi from Yonsei University, South Korea, Venu Divi from the Drexel University College of Medicine in US, Jayakumar.R. Menon from Kerela and Nupur Nerukar from Mumbai. In yet another live demo, a man in his 40s suffering from a voice disorder was restored his male voice. “The workshop was conducted with an intention of dispelling the many opinions of our colleagues and to prove that most of the cases could be operated by using commonly used phonomicrosurgical (steel) instruments rather than using high-end laser treatments,” Dr. Kumar said. The workshop dwelt on the diagnosis of various voice disorders, knowing basic voice therapy techniques demonstrated by speech pathologists and discuss about the diagnostic tools.
