dated November 17, 1958: Agricultural Banks

The provision of proper and timely credit facilities to agriculturists through a network of agricultural banks with a view to stepping up agricultural production was stressed by Mr. K. Kamaraj, Chief Minister of Madras, when he inaugurated on November 16 the First Madras State Conference of Co-operative Agricultural Banks, organised by the Tamilnad Co-operative Union at the Pachaiyappa’s College. Mr. Kamaraj said that agriculture, being the major industry of this State, as of the country as a whole, employed a large percentage of the population. If proper care and attention were bestowed on it, this industry was capable of yielding as good a dividend as some of the heavy industries. If, therefore, the population engaged in agriculture should have secure employment and if food production in the country should be stepped up so as to avoid the necessity of imports from other countries, it was imperative that the agricultural industry should be helped in all ways to stand on its legs. This could be done only by the extension of proper and timely credit facilities through a network of agricultural banks.
