CHENNAI: Eleven hospital workers of the Government RSRM Lying-In Hospital at Royapuram were suspended on charges of corruption and extorting money from patients. Seven ward boys and four ayahs were served their suspension notices for demanding and receiving money from patients in the surgery and labour ward. M.Mohanambal, Superintendent, RSRM Lying-In Hospital, said the suspension would be in force pending a formal enquiry. “We have been constantly getting complaints about hospital workers demanding money from attenders of patients after the baby is delivered. On Monday, the Special Secretary in the Health department Apoorva was deputed to make a preliminary enquiry and take some action,” MRK Panneerselvam Health Minister told The Hindu. “We decided to take drastic action and make an example of this case. It will serve as a strict warning to other such workers in government hospitals,” Mr. Panneerselvam said. It is the first time such a mass suspension was being effected in the department in the recent times. Warning issuedDr. Mohanambal said last Wednesday, a meeting was held in the hospital to issue a warning to ward boys and ayahs of the operation theatre and labour room not to collect money.
