TIRUCHI: At long last, Tiruchi Corporation is poised to start higher secondary sections in two high schools for the first time. Proposals had come from K.K. Nagar Panchayat Union Middle School and Corporation Mathuram High School (along East Boulevard Road), Mayor Sarubala R. Tondiaman said on Monday. The public initiative for upgradation of a local body high school should reflect in a contribution of Rs. 2 lakh for the purpose to the Education department. The Corporation would take care of infrastructure and maintenance, she said. Absence of a higher secondary school in Corporation limits has been a cause for embarrassment for the local body. There are over 50 elementary and middle schools under it. Educationists point out that though a few more schools, particularly in Airport area and Senthaneerpuram, deserve upgrade owing to the student strength and facilities, their proposals have not been acted upon so far. A senior Education department official felt that there can there be political backing for fructification only if the Corporation follows up on the proposals forwarded through public initiatives. The Corporation would also be able to maximise the use of education cess. Despite Tiruchi being a Corporation, the term ‘municipality’ is still attached to names of elementary, middle and high schools. While the Corporation has not been able to cater to the higher academic needs of its students, three other major corporations – Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore – have several higher secondary schools.
