Kollam city bus stand razed

Staff Reporter

To facilitate construction of new underpass with the aid of ADB

Remains of the day: Nothing remains of the Chinnakada bus stand in Kollam after demolition on Monday.

KOLLAM: The city bus stand at Chinnakada, near the clock tower, was demolished by the workers of the Kollam Corporation late on Sunday to facilitate the construction of an underpass there.

All buses and passengers using the stand had been asked to use the Andamukham private bus stand, a little away.

The underpass would be constructed with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme. But private and KSRTC buses hardly obliged the instruction to use the Andamukham bus stand. Though the Chinnakada stand remained closed, buses halted on the road side where passengers boarded and got off.

This created traffic congestion at the entry point to Paikada Road. Commuters had to wait in the sun before boarding buses as waiting sheds too were demolished.

Bus operators said taking their buses to the Andamukham stand would upset schedules and it will lead to disputes between the staff of buses operating in the same routes.

The Corporation authorities maintained that the demolition was consequent to the decision of the Traffic Advisory Committee.

They said it was the duty of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to prepare new schedules. The RTO said new schedules will be prepared and implemented by November 20.

Work on the underpass is expected to start in the first week of December.
