TIRUVARUR: The Rs.39.26-crore underground drainage work is in full swing in the municipal area here and is likely to be completed in six months. The work is being carried out by the contractor of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. A. Mathivanan, Municipal Engineer and Commissioner in-charge of Tiruvarur Municipality, told The Hindu on Monday, that the work was progressing well and pointed out that out of the total project cost of Rs.39.26 crore, the Government gave a total subsidy of Rs.17.50 crore, municipality contributed Rs.6.38 crore and Rs.5.38 crore loan from Tamil Nadu Urban Development Programme. He said that the UGD project commenced in November last year and would be completed within the stipulated time of 18 months. The entire Tiruvarur town would not face stagnation of drainage water during the rainy season once the project was completed. Drainage water pumping stations would be set up at five places and sewage treatment plants would be constructed at Ramake and Kekkarai areas under activated sludge process system. While sewer lines would be installed for 8.6 km stretch and drainage water piles had already been laid for about 26 km out of total length of about 72 km. Similarly, 1,137 manholes have already been constructed out of the total number of 2,850 manholes. Mr. Mathivanan pointed out that as many as 14,539 drainage connections would be given to the houses and the pipes had so far been laid for providing connection to 3,165 houses. The municipality was making special efforts for early completion of the project. The municipality has proposed to collect Rs.6,000 for providing drainage connection to houses and the residents have to lay the drainage pipes at their own cost within their house premises, he said. He said that the municipality was also taking special steps to lay new roads wherever it has been dug for laying drainage pipes. N. Thiyagarajan, a resident, told that the people in the town were facing hardship as the streets and roads were dug for laying drainage pipes. He appealed to the municipal authorities to lay pucca roads after laying the pipes.
