Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial fellowship for zoologist

The fellowship is for two years and carries a stipend of Rs.15,000 per month

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund has awarded its prestigious fellowship to zoologist Rajesh Gopal.

A Ph.D. in Zoology, Dr. Gopal has been awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship because of his project “Evaluating and developing a mitigation strategy for maintaining meta-population structure of tigers in priority landscapes”. The study will provide a strategy to strengthen the source population of tigers in various identified landscapes, apart from suggesting specific restorative inputs to mainstream tiger concerns in the outer landscapes.

The fellowship is tenable for two years and carries a stipend of Rs.15,000 per month and a contingency grant of Rs.25,000 per year. So far, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund has awarded 145 fellowships. Joining the Indian Forest Service in 1978, Dr. Gopal has held various positions starting from Assistant Conservator of Forests in 1980. He is presently Member-Secretary and Inspector-General of Forests, National Tiger Conservation Authority, Union Environment and Forests Ministry. Dr. Gopal’s areas of interest are wildlife management and specialisation in park management, bio-diversity conservation, eco-development and eco-tourism. He has authored several publications on wildlife management.
