The Gnat still causes a buzz

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Over 200 pilots, engineers and flight-testing experts of the yesteryears, and their families from India and abroad are landing in Bangalore for the golden jubilee celebrations of Gnat, the subsonic jet trainer and light fighter aircraft, in India on November 21.

The event, being jointly organised by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), will be held at HAL’s Ghatge Convention Centre on Airport Road.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal F.H. Major will be the chief guest for the event. A film on the plane made by renowned aviation filmmaker Kunal Verma will be screened during the event, while a book edited by Pushpinder Singh will be released. A photo exhibition has also been lined up at the Ghatge Centre.

“The event holds special significance as never in the recent past have we witnessed the coming together of so many experts associated with Gnat under one roof. IAF and HAL are proud to be associated with this event as it will help next generation aviators and engineers rub shoulders with some of the jewels of the past,” said Sanjeev Sahi, Chairman of Gnat Golden Jubilee Celebrations in India and HAL’s Director (Personnel and Administration).

HAL was the licensed producer of the Gnat in India and rolled out nearly 200 of them for the IAF.

The Gnat proved so formidable that Pakistani pilots were briefed to avoid combat with the aircraft.
