ISO certification for Keltron unit

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Keltron Equipment Complex at Karakulam near here has received ISO certification for design, development, manufacturing, marketing and after-sales service of a range of products.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Keltron managing director Captain O.P. Dua said the ISO 9001:2000 certificate would enable the unit to maintain stringent standards in developing and manufacturing world- class products.

The equipment complex at Karakulam is the first major manufacturing unit of Keltron. The unit has a workforce of over 600, employed in three manufacturing divisions, namely the Special Products Group, Power Electronics Group and Security Systems Group. It caters to the demand from the country’s defence units, space programme, ship building companies and power electronics businesses.

Products

The niche products supplied by the complex include echo sounders, underwater telephones, transmission units and ground mines for the Indian Navy, search and rescue beacons developed by ISRO to help stranded fishermen, battery chargers and rectifiers for industrial units and security equipment and attendance management solutions for business houses.

Turnover and target

Mr. Dua said the accreditation would enable the complex to meet national and international standards. “This is an important milestone in the current process of rebuilding. It will help us become more competitive.”

The unit is expecting a turnover of Rs.60 crore in 2008-’09.

“We have an ambitious plan to increase the turnover to Rs.100 crore in the next financial year,” he added.

Mr. Dua said that the equipment complex was working on more strategic tie-ups in the defence and marine sectors.

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim is scheduled to hand over the ISO certificate at a function at the Keltron Equipment Complex on Wednesday.

Nedumangad MLA Mangode Radhakrishnan will preside over the function.
